| Why so many startups fail? |
| Friday, September 21, 2007 |
Many website startups fail because they have a wrong approach to this subject.
1. Copy the model of the giant websites
Assume you get the web script (PHP or ASP or anything else) and good servers exactly same as MySpace.com. Can you get the same success like this giant website? It’s not a wise decision to offer the web features similar to the big sites. The big guy has the strong user database. The users have already adapted these features, and build their own social connections inside the website.
Do you think the users will leave that site and come to your site?
Here is an exception. If you have the site with the scale similar to YouTube.com, then you can consider offering the features similar to MySpace.com. At least you have already had a strong user database to fight against MySpace.com.
2. Offer too many features during startup
The definition of a community site is a website offers the “communication features” for the visitors/users. Communication is the goal why internet comes to the world.
To pitch a community website, it depends on how unique your website feature is.
Many popular websites start from only 1 feature. E.g. YouTube.com – it offers free video upload and sharing. MyBlogLog.com – Build connections with the other bloggers. Del.icio.us – Bookmark the websites.
It is easy to understand why they do this. You never know the outcomes of your new website. If it is hot, then we add more features. If it is not doing well, then we adjust the features. So you don’t need to invest too much on an uncertain investment.
3. Not compatible with the other big websites
If your feature is compatible with the big websites, you have advantages in traffic generation.
E.g. YouTube.com – you can output the “embedded code” and put it to any kind of website. It means you share your traffic with YouTube.
E.g. MyBlogLog.com – you can output the mybloglog javascript and put to a blog site. Your blog readers can see the photos of the others. What do they do? Click it!
It’s a way for borrowing traffic. If you site don’t have this function, I don’t think it will become hot.
4. Lack of global vision
Too many websites are developed based on English. Sadly, English is popular but it doesn’t mean everyone can speak and read without problem.
Don’t trust the “people” say you can sell the products anywhere in the world. They are liars.
On the internet world, our markets are classified according to languages instead of countries.
1. Japan – 90% people cannot read and speak English properly. 2. China – 98% traffic go to Chinese websites only. 3. India – 80% prefer Hindi websites 4. Brazil – Portuguese, not 100%...but almost 99%. 5. South Korea – 95% Korean only.
…….except US, UK, Canada, South East Asia like Singapore and Malaysia, most of the internet population cannot speak and write English very well. E.g. France, they don’t respect you if you speak English in front of them.
To develop a community website with more than 1 language, it is the key of the internet success.
5. Misunderstand the operation model of internet business
Don’t make me laugh. There is no 24/7 auto-run business. Many people scam that internet business can run automatically. In fact, it is not.
Otherwise, Yahoo doesn’t need to hire 10,000+ staff to work on the websites. Google, Baidu, Amazon….how many staff do they have?
If you want to build a big site, it does consume your time and effort. Like my studio, our office hour is from 10:00am to 6:00pm. 5 days work. We have the studios in Hong Kong, Japan, India and Thailand. We are going to set up a new one in Mainland China. You can see…..24/7…automatic….it doesn’t make sense.
Quick money? This community site model can bring you big money if you work properly. Honestly community site grows slowly….at least you need to wait 4 to 6 months to see small results.Labels: your first step |

| The Traffic Manuscript 2 |
|
Keyword Anywhere is down due to the data problem of Overture. However, it cannot kill the software. Actually, I didn't plan to add the new formula to the software coz I thought the timing was not ok.
Now I must change my mind.
My programmers are working hard to upgrade the software. Despite of this upgrade is good enough for all current users, I want to do one more thing for them...it's because I really feel they are supporting us...
This week I write an ebook. I haven't written any new ebook for 2 years. Traffic Manuscript is not written by me. It was written by my private student Michael Shang according to my speech in Tokyo.
Here's the preface of the new book...let's call it "Traffic Manuscript II".
This report is written for my dearest users of Keyword Anywhere, my wife Piano Chen and my son Issac Hui.
It is Thursday (13 September 2007). I never forget this date.
We found the data problem from Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool during the moment of my wife was going to deliver the baby. On the same day, I would give a charity teleseminar in Singapore.
If you were me, what you would do?
When I’m writing this report, we have brought the baby (my son) to the home. He is sleeping very well…very peaceful.
I sit down and open the laptop, write down my experience in keyword research for SEM (search engine marketing).
I haven’t written any ebook or report for 2 years. Traffic Manuscript was written by my private student Michael Shang and my wife Piano Chen, according to my speech in Tokyo, Japan in December 2006. Most of the time I speak and they write.
Up to now, there are 2 reports written by me. The first one was the user report of RSStoBlog developed by Michelle Timothy in 2005. Another was the user report of Brainstorm Generator in 2005 again.
Traffic Manuscript II is the 3rd one.
I try to make this report simple.
From this report, you will learn:
1. Rethink your search engine marketing strategies 2. Rethink your website business models
I believe this document can add value to your business, for sure.
For this ebook (74 pages), I am not going to sell it. Indeed, I will give it to all my customers of Keyword Anywhere and Traffic Manuscript. They deserve to get it. In this report, I write down a lot of my traffic generation and site building strategies that I haven't disclosed yet. The draft of this book is finished. Now it is under editing. I hope we will send it out on Saturday or next Monday. Labels: traffic generation |

| Finally my son was born... |
| Monday, September 17, 2007 |
I have waited for this date for a long time.
My son (Issac Hui) was born on 13 September 2007.
13 September 2007 is a special date for me.
1. My software suffered from the data problem of Overture. It's not a big problem, but it still cause a headache. The new version will be ready within 2 weeks.
2. I would do a charity seminar for a Singaporean marketer Stuart Tan between 13:00 to 14:00 (Hong Kong Time). We delayed it because my son was delivered on 13:20. Anyway we still did the event on Friday.
It's like God arranges everything to me. A big challenge plus a great happiness, they happened on the same day.
Take a look at my son. His nickname is "Habibi". Habibi is an Arabic word. It means "My Love".Labels: general |

| Keyword Anywhere is not for you if......... |
| Tuesday, September 11, 2007 |
I don't like my invention is used by someone who doesn't have the global vision.
Personally, I recommend intermediate and advanced web publishers to use Keyword Anywhere (KA). They are the group who can best use and get the most from this "toy".
As an inventor, I prefer to sell Keyword Anywhere to the right users, rather than the users without vision.
If you think Keyword Anywhere is not right for you, please don't buy it. It wastes your money and effort.
I believe the current users of KA who are aggressive to grow their business to global level, instead of playing at English market alone. It's always good to have a group of users who have similar mindset like us.Labels: traffic generation |

| Keyword Anywhere - it's not just a keyword research tool! |
|
Take a look below, it's a post relating to a software called Keyword Anywhere.
My friend asked me....Is it just another keyword research tool?
Indeed, it is not. I don't need a normal keyword research software, especially I am the guy who is always looking at the opportunities from different markets. I need a smarter software.
Keyword Anywhere is a toy which helps me to explore opportunities from different markets.
Market: English is one market. Keyword Anywhere looks at 10 markets.
Keyword Anywhere explores a group of keywords which have huge "traffic" potential. It can help us to dominate in the foreign market easily, especially if you know how to play SEO properly.
1.7 Million Unique Visitors Last 30 Days
We all know keyword plays the most important role in search engine marketing. Unlike English market, foreign market is not competitive. It's damn easy to go to there and make some profits.
I'm not sure Keyword Anywhere is right for you. However, I have employed this strategies since 2005. Maybe I am the only one to do that......that's why there is always a difference between you and me.Labels: traffic generation |

| My baby is coming |
| Wednesday, September 05, 2007 |
I'm sorry that I haven't talked too much about web publishing in my blog recently. Anyway, I believe it is too boring when we look at the same topic everyday, right?
Honestly, I cannot focus on my work these months. It's because my baby is coming. My wife is going to give birth in September.
Yesterday we saw the doctor. She told us the baby would come any time since he was mature enough.
Now I stay at home, and take care of my wife every minute. If you are a husband (or wife), you must understand what I feel.
During this period, I realize that a "team" is very important to me. Even if I'm always out of office, they still work hard on the projects. Here, I would give a special thank to Vince Tan, Gobala Krishnan and Darrell Tyler, who helps me to manage the new product launch in mid September. Definitely my friends Ewen Chia and Johan Mok also help me a lot.
In the critical moment, you can see who is your real friend or not.Labels: general |

| Father of Fiber Optic Communications |
|
Last few days, we were invited to attend the I.T. forum in mainland China.
Honestly, the atmosphere was quite boring. Piano and I fell asleep frequently.
In the forum, it was our honour to meet Prof. Charles Kuen Kao - Father of Fiber Optic Communications.
To my point of view, without Prof. Kao, we cannot enjoy high-speed internet connection now. And our "internet marketing" industry cannot run so fast!
Prof. Kao reminds me not giving up if I believe it is right. Thanks Professor. I always remember your words.Labels: general |
