How to Choose Physical Products to Sell Online
Wednesday, March 26, 2008
Hello everyone.

By now you are probably interested in selling physical products online. I am going to provide some tips on choosing physical products to sell online.

Products that will do well on a physical e-commerce store should meet these criteria:
  • Low wholesale cost - you will be able to buy it in large quantities, and cheap prices; this will help you gain high profit margins.

  • Small size & light weight - since the product is physical, you will need to store it and ship it; small and light products will be much easier to manage.

  • Uniqueness - you need to find products that is "different" from others, so your customers will not be able to find it elsewhere; this will give be a competitive advantage to your business.

  • Quality - since the product is physical your customers will feel it, hold it, touch it, maybe even wear it, use it, or even eat it; make sure the products are of high quality and looks, and feels good so that your customers are satisfied and will come back for more.

  • Price Range - the products should be of a good price range for profitability - selling products that cost $0.30 online will not be worth your time and effort, products that cost thousands of dollars will have only a few buyers (few, not none); therefore, be sure to find products of a good price range that will appeal to most people. I suggest something between $5 - $50 for a start.
Product Ideas: toys, fashion accessories, mobile accessories, mp3 players, electronic items, jewelry, hand bags, clothing, watches, books, computer gadgets, food....

Affordable high quality unique products of a small size will be the best product choices, to start an e-commerce business that will sell physical products.

Kelvin, why don't you operate a retail business?
Thursday, March 13, 2008
Good question.

I'm now in China. Most of my friends, business partners and customers are not from this country. To operate a retail business, we can imagine there is a high logistic cost.

OK. The alternative is to operate a wholesale business.

China is a country with rich of resources. My wife loves Chinese Tea a lot. Therefore it's perfect to build a database of wholesale Chinese Tea.

Our selection criteria of the wholesale products are:

1. Unique and high quality
2. Good profit margin for our business partners like you
3. Easy to sell in your country

I'm sure you are interested what kind of the product Kelvin is going to introduce you :-)

Chinese Tea...yes it is one of them. We are traveling in every city in mainland China and exploring interesting items for you.

Keep in touch.

Is Selling Physical Products a Profitable Business?
My answer is "right".

Compared to software or ebook, the profit margin of selling physical products is definitely lower. However, the entry level is higher compared to the digital stuff which can be done by any people.

Like what I said in my book Traffic Manuscript II, one of our partnership website 925silver4u.com, it made us 560K USD net profit last year. The profit margin is average 55%. The profit, it's better than selling an ebook for sure.

One of the reasons I move to China, it's because I can investigate the right product items to sell on the internet. Since I'm a local Chinese, it's definitely an advantage.

I sincerely suggest you to rethink your internet business model. Making money by Adsense or any PPC, or selling digital products, they are NOT your only choice!

Keep in touch.

Wholesale Products
After setting our home, the next task is to build a wholesale product database which is used to help our friends to diversify their product items.

In the last 6 months, I think I promise at least 15 people who are my closed business friends all over the world. I keep my promise so I build a very strong business network in China, and next is to refer the right wholesale products to my friends.

Right now, everything is not ready. It's because we need to develop a cost effective logistic model. Within 1-2 months, we do believe our system will be open.

The Ultimate Business Trip in Mainland China
Monday, March 10, 2008
To my parent, I'm a strange person. I was born in Hong Kong, startup business oversea and now return to my home country China.

Why I say it's an "Ultimate" trip? It's because I will stay there permanently. This means, I will reconstruct my business model and build a new one in China.

Thanks for my friends, without their support, a foreign Chinese cannot settle in China properly.

I am not going to change my main business model, it's still internet related. However, I do believe I can explore more subjects that both you and me are interested.

Change this blog....I know not many guys have business experience in China. How about I post more photos and details relating to my life here?

For my home, it is still in renovation. The size is around 250 square metres (I will keep you post my home pics) ..it's good enough to set up a playground for my son. The best thing is a golf club is very closed to my home. You can imagine I'll be there more than in the office :-)

After 8-month holiday, what I'm going to do....
It's a long but meaningful holiday. My son was born and I saw how he grew.

Today he's 6-month old. He cries and laughs loudly.

In the previous 8 months, I did nothing on my business. Indeed, I kept building relationship and connections in mainland China from local entrepreneurs, bankers to government officers. I observed their behaviours in business operation and explored the rooms for me.

I found it.

My wife and I decide to build our business in China. We buy an apartment in Guangzhou and start up seversal projects. Most of them are unrelated to internet or technology. Anyway, they are still a kind of investment.

To acquire a right business, it is not easy. At least, you need to make a shortlist from a group of candidates. So I find my previous working partner Success Resources to do me a favour. Public event may be one of the right media to explore the interesting businesses.

Apart from China, another project in country level will be setup in mid-2008. The location is in Thailand. The orientation and operation model will be finalized within months.

During these processes, I find that I'm not a real easy-going person to work with. I am too conservative in every steps especially for the risk and capital management. If I feel the odds
are not enough, I prefer to give up the project.

I saw a lot of new entrepreneurs from Asia to North America. One of their weakness is they are unable to manage the operation risks of the project. They always say "I think...I think....I want to be big....". They always "think" and "want", that's why they stay at the same place up to now.

They expect me to help because my name is big. Guys, my name is not big and I don't intend to do it. You think I'm big....but honestly I am just a normal person, like you.

"Help". There is no free lunch. If you are looking for partnership, you must motivate us how we can get mutual benefits from the project. It's business, not charity. No experienced businessman love to "help" without benefit.

I write something above, because I received too many invitations last 8 months. I think it is better to tell you what I think. When you approach the other party (expert or higher level), remember my words. They can help.

I'm retired?
Thursday, March 06, 2008
No. I'm not.

Indeed, I reserve a year to take care of my son - Issac who was born on 13 Sept 2007.

You know, it is not easy to make this decision. When "money" and "family" are in front of you, but you can choose either one only, what will you do?

I definitely choose "my son". :-)
